Whenever I have ever gone to the painting with an idea, the act of touching paint quickly undoes the idea. I tightrope my way in without a net underneath, by allowing the paint to guide me through. I look for relationships right away, and seasonal color sense dominates. Color finds the shape. Once ideas start connecting, the dialogue between ideas becomes like a narrative story I am telling. My eyes tell my hands how to move. They find the colors and my body moves the paint: it's a direct process, with intention. That is how I know when I am painting well, (when I am moving the paint with my whole body, not my wrists).
